Our soup mixes feature organic beans and all-natural vegetables.  These vegetables, sourced from a small company in northern Wisconsin, are the absolute best we could find. They are non-GMO, air-dried, not processed with any chemicals, and contain no preservatives.  Our broth mixes are made with organic spices in accordance with our secret recipes.  Our broth mixes are so delicious that our soups need no other seasoning! All our soups are vegan, gluten-free and easily prepared – just add water and some olive oil for richness if desired.

Our Bean Story

When Cynthia’s daughter, Jasmine, was born, she vowed to feed her as naturally and nutritiously as possible, even making her baby food from scratch!  Jasmine’s father is Iraqi, and a large part of the Iraqi diet includes beans and rice, so they got used to eating and enjoying these dishes.  Later, when Cynthia spent many years as a poor grad student (and relatively poor professor) she continued to experiment with all kinds of beans because they were  inexpensive, very nutritious, and Jasmine loved them. She would make enough to share with neighbors and friends. Cynthia truly enjoyed cooking and eating beans and soups, and was glad others enjoyed them, too.

In 1998, for a week straight Cynthia woke up in the middle of the night with extremely clear and profound direction to start her own bean business. She took classes at the Women’s Business Development Center and tested lots of bean recipes. However, the complexities, laws, and regulations to start a food production business were overwhelming, so the bean business was put “on the back burner.”  In early 2009 Cynthia noticed some beautiful clay cookware in a favorite store. “What’s that?” she asked. “It’s a bean pot”, the owner replied, “Do you ever make beans? Would you like to make some bean mixes for me to sell with the pot?” “Do I? Would I like to?” Cynthia beamed…and with the help of Thomas, the bean soup business was reborn.

Our soups cook wonderfully on the stove, or can be cooked in a crock pot, as Jasmine now does to feed her roommates in college!

The Greater Good

At Spark of the Heart we take our commitment to the greater good seriously.  Our products are packaged in Chicago with pride by the folks at Gateway to Learning and the Douglas Center and Little City Foundation.  Gateway to Learning, the Douglas Center, and Little City Foundation are centers where developmentally challenged adults  develop intellectual and motor skills and learn to use those skills to enrich their lives.  We also donate soup to local not-for-profit organizations that help feed those in need. Because food pantries frequently receive foods that are often more filling than nutritious or delicious, our soups are always welcomed.
